State Drivers Training Practice Test

When approaching a law enforcement vehicle that has activated its emergency lights, the safest and most appropriate action is to move at least one lane to the left, if it is safe to do so. This maneuver helps create a buffer space between your vehicle and the stopped vehicle, reducing the risk of an accident and providing a safer environment for both the officer and all drivers on the road.

This practice is often referred to as the "Move Over Law," which is designed to protect emergency responders and others on the roadside. It is essential to stay aware of your surroundings and check for other vehicles and obstacles before changing lanes.

While continuing to drive at a slow speed may seem cautious, it does not remove you from the potential danger zone, which is why it is not the recommended action. Stopping immediately behind the stopped vehicle could potentially lead to a rear-end collision if other drivers do not see the stopped traffic in time. Turning around and finding another route might seem like a safe option, but it is not always feasible and could create confusion or unsafe situations, especially in traffic.
